

Volunteers were represented from the Arlington Food Assistance Center, AHC Inc, Arlington Police Department, Arlington Fire Department, Busboys and Poets, Hyatt Regency at Crystal City, Arlington Federal Credit Union, Georgetown University, Marymount University, Northern Virginia Community College and numerous businesses from all across Arlington. Students and volunteers alike were actively engaged throughout the morning, with many students trying their hand at networking with volunteers after the event. Each student heard from volunteer speakers about their education and career paths, career changes and strategies for making transitions between high school and college, and eventually entering the work force. Students and volunteers heard from Bishop Garrison, the event’s keynote speaker, and then engaged in a “speed networking” activity. The Sophomore Career Day is an annual event in which students are able to hear from professionals in the Northern Virginia area and ask questions about their careers. My food was no longer hot and it was a total waste of my time and money.On Thursday, April 30th, 40 volunteers and 200 sophomore students gathered in the Wakefield High School cafeteria to discuss education and career paths for the Sophomore Career Day. I asked again and the hostess asked a kitchen runner who eventually came back and pointed out that the food was, and had been, on a shelf next to the hostess stand the whole time. I asked again 10 minutes later and the hostess said it was being packaged. Upon return 15 minutes later, the hostess said my order wasn’t ready. Eventually I got my order accepted and left to do errands. The restaurant was fairly empty - not even 25% filled and several employees were just standing at the bar. I asked the hostess for help but she preferred seating people as they came in rather than helping. I asked to order to go and the hostess directed me to a kiosk that had error messages on the printer and was not reading my card. When I arrived, the place was fairly empty - no line or wait for tables. order online because my wifi had a low signal. I had to be in Shirlington this morning so I first tried calling to order. At Busboys and Poets, we stand united in amplifying Black voices and fostering meaningful dialogue. The decline preceded covid and it has just gotten worse. We do our best to keep gluten-free but we do operate kitchens that prepare wheat, flour, yeast, bread and other gluten items. This restaurant used to be amazing but now it is mediocre at best.
